What Makes a Master Carver?
Tipene immersion studied carving (or whakairo) for 10 years under the tutelage of some of the finest and highly regarded master carvers in New Zealand, Aotearoa. Carving is a beautiful art form but in Aotearoa carving also a highly sacred and venerated in the Māori culture. It is also important to understand that without the knowledge of kaupapa Māori (philosophical doctrines) a carving is not truly of Aotearoa.
