Tipene Repia is a reclusive artist born and currently residing in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Tipene is a talented artist in many mediums but specialises in the art of carving which for many centuries has been highly revered in Oceania.
The key attributes of Tipene’s carving are intricate detailing, impeccable continuity and overall exquisite quality of each piece.
Ancenstral Māori mythology and traditional themes feature in many of Tipene’s works, however the range of works are wide and varied as are the commissions that are produced.
Tipene immersion studied for over a decade under the finest whakairo carving artists in Aotearoa. He possesses not only a gifted creative mind and finely honed carving skills but Tipene is also fully versed in kaupapa Māori (philosophical doctrines) which greatly influence any traditional commissions that are undertaken.
A selcusive nature, indifference to collaborations combined with referred private commissions has resulted in very restricted gallery showings and limited public exposure to Tipene’s back catalogue. With the permission of a selection of private collectors and benefactors the gallery on this website presents a vignette of the works of Tipene.
